Job Summary and Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY:

Utilizes Phlebotomy skills and training to perform collection of blood samples to obtain information utilized in diagnosis and evaluation of a patient’s medical situations. Fulfills departmental responsibilities with the long-range plan, mission, vision and values of the hospital. Promotes a supportive environment that encourages collegiality.

POSITION QUALIFICATION:

High school graduate or equivalent. On the job training or previous experience. Must be able to exhibit ability to collect samples from every age group.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

Demonstrates the ability perform specific competencies as listed on the Competency Validation Checklist. Meets mutually-agreed upon performance goals/objectives established annually as listed on the Performance Evaluation Tool.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases. Contact with patients in a wide variety of circumstances (accident, injuries and illness). Has available personal protective equipment necessary for performance of task without risk of exposure. Occasionally subject to irregular work hours, and pressure due to high volume, multitasking, multiple phone calls and inquiries from doctors and nurses.

  • Chooses appropriate channels and times to discuss complaints or concerns.
  • Maintains confidentiality by following hospital rules and reminding others when necessary.
  • Participates in continuous quality improvement activities by making suggestions for improvement and helping to make positive changes.
  • Keeps supervisor appropriately informed of daily activities and developments.
  • Accurately performs assignments in a timely manner.
  • Is consistently on time and has good attendance.
  • Stays informed regarding hospital and department issues by attending meetings and reading correspondence.
  • Activity participates in personal development plans by attending education programs and professional development activities.
  • Actively participates in the team spirit of the department, helping to accomplish the department mission, and leading a helping hand to other members of the team as appropriate.
  • Maintains environment of care standards by knowing and following procedures in life safety, fire safety, infection control, universal precautions and security.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the hospital’s ethics and compliance program as evidenced by participation in annual training and adherence to regulations and policies.
  • Provides accountability for recruitment and retention activities as evidenced by feedback on employee satisfaction surveys
